What is DHEA
(Courtesy extracting from the book
"DHEA" by Alana pascal)
DHEA(Dehydroepiandrosterone) is
an adrenal hormone naturally produced in large quantities during our
youth. Current research has found that its production begins to decline
around the age 25 and could possibly be the link between youth and aging.
Using DHEA, doctors are treating conditions such as: Cancer,
AIDS, Heart Disease, Aging, Menopause, Diabetes, Chronic Fatigue, Obesity,
Alzheimer's, Lupus, Osteoporosis, Stress.
DHEA when it is metabolized, it
produces a metabolite called DHEAS. Many researchers feel that DHEA and
DHEAS levels are the most meaningful indicators of biological aging.
Evidence indicates that low DHEA/DHEAS levels appears to be associated
with the onset of a number medical conditions, including rheumatoid
arthritis, heart disease and some of the more bewildering syndromes
related to immunosuppression. Lower DHEA/DHEAS levels can also provide a
diagnostic index to the development and progression of diseases like
cancer, HIV and AIDS.
Most practitioners feel that a blood
baseline level of DHEA and DHEAS should first be established before
prescribing the substance. Under no circumstances should DHEA be given to
a young person unless a particular conditions warrants testing for the
DHEA/DHEAS levels, as in the case with AIDS. Otherwise, supplementation is
generally inadvisable until age 35. in perimenopausal women between the
ages 45-50, a dose between 25-50mg per day of DHEA would be appropriate.
For men, 50-100mg of DHEA appears to be beneficial for cancer prevention,
as well as reducing their risk of cardiovascular disease.
