Botanical Herbs maybe used in Fighting Cancer

(Courtesy extracted from Burton Golberg's book "Alternative Medicine")

Algae ( Chlorella, Sea vegetables, Green Concentrated)

Chlorella contains more than 20 different vitamins and minerals and 19 amino acids, including large concentration of lysine, which is helpful against viruses associated with cancer(e.g. Leukemia and cervical cancer). Chlorella is often used in combination with other "green foods" such as spirulina, barley greens and wheat grass, which have the similar properties. Japanese scientists have conducted extensive research on the antitumor activity of Chlorella, which has shown strong promise for the treatment of leukemia and breast cancer.

Sea Vegetables, also known as marine algae or seaweeds, sea vegetables have strong anticancer activity. Tumor growth in mice with implanted sarcomas was inhibited in the range of 89% to 95% when mice were fed with a seaweed called kombu.

Cat's Claw (una de gato)

This indigenous people of Peru have traditionally used this rain forest vine as a tribal medicine for cancer, arthritis, and other disease. The name cat's claw, derives from the fact that the thorns found on this vine resemble the claws of a cat. Recent studies indicates that the plant, Uncaria tomentosa, contains substances that have immune- and digestion-enhancing properties. These beneficial constituents of cat's claw include several types of antioxidant compounds (polyphenols, triterpines, and the plant steroids beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, and campesterol). The presence of these compounds may, in turn, account for the antioxidant and antitumor properties of cat's claw. According to several unpublished studies, cat's claw treatment has been shown to lead to the remission of brain tumors and other tumors.

Essiac

In the 1920s, a Canadian nurse named Rene Caisse introduced a nontoxic herbal tea for treating cancer. The tea was originally named Lasagen by the Ojibway, a Native American tribe based in the Ontario, Canada. Caisse obtained the fornula for this natural herbal combination from a breast cancer patient who had been healed by an Ojibway medicine man; she renamed it Essiac (which is Caisse spelled backwards) and used it to treat thousands of cancer patients until her death in 1978.

Although Essiac has never undergone randomized clinical trials, Caisse and her associates recorded many impressive case histories attesting to its efficacy. The recoveries encompass cancers of the pancreas, breast, ovaries, esophagus, bladder, bones, and bile ducts, as well as lymphoma and mailignant melanoma.

It was suggested that to obtain the best results, combine Essiac and other anticancer agents and other cancer-fighting modalities.

Echinacea

This herbs has well-known immune-enhancing abilities. Echinacea was found to increase NK(natural killer) cell activity by 221% in patients with inoperable metastatic esophageal or colorectal cancer. Patients with inoperable, far-advanced liver cancer showed a 90% increase in their NK cell activity when Echinacea was combined with a thymus-stimulating agent (thymostimulin). In addition, a natural chemical substance in Echinacea, arabinogalactan, stimulates the tumor-killing activity of macrophages. The primary role of Echinacea is to provide protection against infection, a common and sometimes deadly complication in advanced-stage cancers.

Flavonoids

This class of phytochemicals is responsible for many of the bright colors in fruits and vegetables, and they are also among the most beneficial substances found in these cancer-fighting foods. Among the better known flavonoids are such bioflavonoids as citrin, hesperidin, rutin, and quercetin; other flavonoids include the proanthocyanins and anthocyanins. Studies indicate that quercetin dramatically inhibits the growth of cancer cells in the stomach. Anthocyanins and other flavonoids extracted from citrus and grape seeds are highly effective "scavengers" of free radicals-highly reactive and unstable molecules that promote tumor growth.

Garlic

Long appreciated as a folk remedy believed to benefit the immune system and to help ward off colds, cumulative scientific research now highlights garlic's proven ability to work as a cancer inhibitor and as a valuable adjunct to alternative cancer therapy. Much of its progressive research began in the 1950s in Japan, a country known for its medicinal use of garlic. Data supporting garlic's medicinal claims come from human, animal and cell studies. Studies of eating habits in China and Italy where garlic consumption is high established that the risk of stomach cancer declined by about 50% among these people with high raw garlic intake. Animal studies have shown that aged garlic extract appears to stop the growth of cancers of the breast, bladder, skin, and colon, and the initial development of malignant tumors of the esophagus, stomach, and lungs. One study involving mice who received 20 once-weekly injections of daily sulfide, a garlic constituent, reduced the frequency of colon and rectal cancer by 74%. Research involving human cell cultures indicate that garlic may inhibit the proliferation of breast, skin, and nerve cancer cells. According to Petesch, Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract may produce these anticancer benefits by speeding up the excretion of chemical carcinogens from the cells, protecting DNA from carcinogens damage, enhancing the activity of enzymes that detoxify poisons, and boosting the vitality of the immune system. Garlic protected DNA by blocking the toxic effects of aflatoxin, a fungus found on peanuts and grains, which would otherwise help precipitate genetic mutations.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba is a member of an ancient family of trees(Gingkoales) no longer found in the wild. For thousands of years, Ginkgo has been a staple of Chinese herbal medicine, recommended for coughs, asthma, and acute allergic inflammations. Ginkgolide B, one of the active compounds in Gingko, apparently works by interfering with a chemical in the body known as PAF (platelet activating factor); PAF may affect the cancer process by acting as a tumor-promoting agent, and may affect tumor growth by stimulating inflammation and inducing angiogenesis. PAF levels tend to be markedly higher in patients with malignant breast tumors compared to those with benign breast tumors (or healthy subjects). British research has shown that Ginkgolide B is effective in treating kidney disorders and counteracting a number of toxins.

Ginseng (Panax)

A report in Free Radical Biology and Medicine states that Panax ginseng has a wide range of beneficial actions, including antiaging, immune enhancement, antistress, and antitumor effects. Most of these effects may be attributed to ginseng's ability to protect against " peroxidized fatty acids" which in turn, generate free radicals from the unsaturated fatty acids in cell membranes. Peroxidized fatty acids are those in the cell membrane that have been attacked by free radicals, in turn producing peroxides; these cause a chain reaction producing even more free radicals.

In a study of alatoxin-induced cancer, those animals receiving ginseng had a 75% lower rate of liver cancer and a 29% lower rate of lung cancer compared to animals that did not receive ginseng. Japanese scientists have also observed strong inhibitory effects of ginseng on human ovarian cancer growth in test animals. Gastric carcinoma cells treated with ginseng oil in culture also appeared to halt the growth of the cancer cells.

Regular use of Panax ginseng can cut one's cancer risk in half, according to Korean researchers T.K. Yung and S.Y. Choi who conducted survey of 1,987 pairs of individual, each pair including a person with cancer, age and sex matched to a person without cancer. People who had used ginseng for 1 years had a 36% lower cancer rate than nonusers; those who used ginseng for 5 years or more had a 69% lower cancer rate. Siberian ginseng stimulates the anticancer activity of NK cells and may also help regenerate NK cells destroyed by toxins or by conventional treatment.

Grape Seed Extract / Pycnogenols

Green Tea (Catechins)

Green tea is a highly popular beverage among the Chinese and Japanese who consume, on average, 2-10 cups daily. Green tea contains a substance called epigallocatechin gallate, which inhibits the growth of cancers and lowers cholesterol. This is one of a number chemical compounds known as "polyphenolic catechins", which are many times stronger than vitamin E in defending the body against free radicals. The catechins found in green tea support the immune system's responsiveness and have demonstrated powerful anticarcinogenic effects. Studies have indicated that green tea consumption can reduce the risk of cancers of the liver and throat. Green tea flavonols (the active bioflavonoids in the tea) may offer substantial cancer protection if consumed on a regular basis.

Maitake Mushroom (Grifola)

Pau D'Arco

This herbal extract from the inner bark of trees of the Tahebuia genus, found in South American rain forests, offers another herbal options in treating cancer. the main active ingredient is a substance called lapachol, a substance whose molecular composition makes it uniquely suited to induce strong biological activity against cancer. Nine patients with various cancers (liver, kidney, breast, and prostate adenocarcinomas and squamous cell carcinoma of the palate and uterine cervix) were given pure lapachol in 250mg capsules with meals. All 9 patients showed a shrinkage of tumors and reductions in tumor related pain. 3 patients experienced complete remissions, and there were no adverse side effects. In studies of mice injected with leukemia cells, the life span of animals given lapachol was 80% greater than that of the control group.

Modified Citrus Pectin

This substance is a special pH-altered form of citrus pectin, a type of fiber that lowers blood cholesterol levels. The research on modified citrus pectin indicated that its therapeutical potential for helping to prevent cancer metastases is quite strong. Apparently, a compound called rhamnogalacturonan found in modified citrus pectin has a " bridging effect" that enhances the cell immune response to cancer. Another study indicates that NK cell and macrophage cytotoxic activity are also enhanced by modified citrus pectin.

Silymarin (Milk Thistle)

The herb has served as a supportive treatment for cirrhosis (associated with liver cancer) and hepatitis, as well as fatty degeneration of the liver caused by alcohol and other chemicals. A review of double-blind studies concluded that Silymarin is a therapeutically useful medicinal plant that accelerates the process of regeneration of damaged liver tissue. Rich in antioxidants and bioflavonoids, Silymarin appears to reduce the levels of various liver enzymes found in the blood of patients with chronic liver disease, suggesting a liver protective effect.

Some clinical believe that Silymarin should always be given in conjunction with sublingual L-glutathione because Silymarin can induce a particular enzyme (cytochrome P 450) action in the liver which sometimes produces excessive oxidized free radical by-products that use up available amount of L-gutathione.
