YOHIMBE BARK/ EXTRACT
DESCRIPTION : Yohimbe is a herbal aphrodisiac, stimulant and tonic.
PHYSIOLOGY : Yohimbe Bark affects both the male and female reproductive, nervous, circulatory and respiratory systems. It contains an alkaloid, yohimbine, that produces blood vessel engorgement in the pelvic area and therefore stimulates the lower center of the spinal cord. This stimulation can cause a strong aphrodisiac effect. Yohimbe has been useful in treating certain cases of diminished sexual interest. It's generally of no value when impotency stems from organic nerve troubles, and it can be harmful when used for impotency caused by chronic inflammation of the sexual organs.
TOXICITY, CAUTIONS & CONTRA-INDICATIONS : Yohimbe has a long folk history of helping increase libido or sexual energy and desire. However, many of the claims surrounding yohimbe are merely folklore. Unfortunately, yohimbe has been recommended in sports medicine for male athletes, especially body builders, for its supposed content of the male hormone testosterone, which can cause an anabolic or muscle building effect. No scientific research, however, indicates that either yohimbe bark or yohimbine contains testosterone or increases blood testosterone levels, or produces anabolic effects. Among the symptoms caused by yohimbine from the yohimbe bark are excessive adrenal or sympathetic nerve stimulation, hypertension, increased heart rate, irritability, water retention, anxiety, and hyperactivity. Yohimbe should not be used by people who have inflammation in their sexual organs, nor by anyone taking drugs - especially tranquilizers, antihistamines or narcotics - or significant amounts of alcohol. Yohimbine can produce significant side effects if taken over a long period of time. If you have a cardiovascular disorder, kidney dysfunction, diabetes, abnormal blood pressure, irregular blood sugar, or are taking cardiac or psychiatric medication, advise your health care practitioner of your condition before asking him or her to prescribe yohimbine or before taking any yohimbe-containing product.
