DESCRIPTION : Cat's
Claw (Uncaria tomentosa Willd. DC.), of the Rubiaceae family, is a woody
vine, typically two or three inches or more in diameter, that grows in
Amazonian Peru, at elevations of 2200 to 7500 feet. (Uncaria guianensis (Aubl.)
Gmel.), which grows below 2200 feet, is also used . The extract is made
from the bark of the woody stem. One or more species of Cats Claw contain
Quinovic acid glycosides,Catechins, D-Catechol, Dihydrocorynantheine,
Ellagic acid, Gallic acid, Gambirine, Hyperin, Quercetin,
Proanthocyanidins, the alkaloids Rhynchophylline, Isorhyno-hophylln,
Mytraphylline, Pteropodine, Isopteropodine and Hirsutine, Beta-sitosterol
and Rutin.
PHYSIOLOGY: Cat's
Claw activates T-Lymhocytes and macrophages, and normalizes
Immunoglobulins; it enhances phagocytosis; it is antioxidant, anti-viral,
anti-mutagenic, hypotensive, anti-edemic and contraceptive.
INDICATIONS: The bark
decoction or extract has been used for "bone pains", to cleanse
kidneys, for wounds (used both internally and externally), arthritis,
neuro-bronchitis, allergies, rheumatism, diverticulitis, Crohn's disease,
peptic and gastric ulcers, gastritis, parasites, colitis, leaky bowel
syndrome, dysentery, hemorrhoids, cancer (used with other herbs, and to
moderate the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation), herpes (herpes
genitalis, stomatitis aftesa, and varicelli zoster), diabetes, and
inflammation. It sometimes turns grey hair back to its original color.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
1/2 teaspoon to 2 teaspoons in a mug of hot
water, taken throughout the day.

TOXICITY, CAUTIONS & CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Not recommended for women intending to become
pregnant due to mild contraceptive effect. Not toxic; an aqueous total
extract given to mice orally at 5 grams per kilogram body weight and
intraperitoneally at 2 g/kg, and a raw alkaloid mixture given orally at 2
g/kg and intraperitoneally at 1 g/kg, produced no observable changes in
behavior over 14 days of observation.
