Parkinson Disease

Parkinson's, or "shaking palsy," is a disease of the nervous system. The exact cause of the disease is unknown but it appears that a lack of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain is a strong factor. Dopamine carries messages from one nerve cell to another. When the brain loses its ability to produce dopamine, however, symptoms of Parkinson's may become apparent. These include tremors, muscle stiffness, fatigue, drooling, loss of appetite and impaired speech. In severe cases the body becomes very stiff and the person may suffer from depression and dementia. The result is usually death from pneumonia or infection. Parkinson's is one of the most common debilitating diseases today, affecting as many as 1 in 100 elderly Americans.
