Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a disease in which the bones become progressively
weaker causing poor posture and bone fractures. This occurs because of a
combination of physiological, hormonal and nutritional changes and
deficiencies. The amount of minerals found in most people's bones begins
to decline after the age of thirty-five. This bone loss has no symptoms
while it is happening and may not be noticed till a minor accident
causes a broken bone. With severe bone loss the vertebrae may begin to
compress, causing crowding of nerves and internal organs. Women suffer
from two types of osteoporosis, one related to declining levels of
estrogen and the other to deficiencies in nutrition, particularly
calcium.
Symptoms
Compression fractures in the vertebrae, evidenced by a
"shrinking" in height and also by back pain.
Stooping and rounding of the shoulders.
Bone fractures in the wrist, hip and/or spinal cord.
