following statements are not intending to replace your physician's
treatments. Any serious illness should always consult with your
doctors.
Menopause
Menopause usually occurs in a woman's 40s or 50s when a woman
stops ovulating and menstruating, the ovaries stop producing the
hormones progesterone and estrogen. Estrogen is a very important
hormone that helps cells in other parts of the body, including the
bladder, skin and bones, function properly. Estrogen is necessary
for the body's internal thermostat to work properly as well. After
menopause other organs may continue to produce estrogen for the
body, but at a much lower level.
Symptoms
Hot flashes are a common symptom of menopause. Characterized
by a sudden flushing of the face and/or body, which can be
compounded by perspiration and a cold, clammy feeling, hot
flashes can last for a few minutes or over half an hour. For
some, hot flashes come on once a week and for others, a few
times a day. Usually not disruptive, they can be severe in some
women.
Vaginal dryness is another symptom. The vaginal wall becomes
thinner, less elastic and dries out. Sexual intercourse can
become painful, and the vagina is more susceptible to infection.
The change in vaginal tissue can lead to urinary stress
incontinence in some women; pressure put on the bladder (via
exercise, coughing, laughing) can cause a temporary loss of
urinary control.
How alternative medicine may
potentially help?
Many nutritional supplements may help to minimize or even
eliminate the unpleasant side effects of menopause. Many vitamins
help improve cell function and protect against loss. Estrogen
therapy (estrogen combined with progestin) is often recommended by
doctors in order to prevent osteoporosis and to relieve severe
complications arising out of menopause
Herbs
Dong
quai has properties that may help to alleviate hot flashes and
other symptoms associated with menopause.
Chasteberry/vitex
can have a beneficial effect upon menopause-related symptoms.
Black
cohosh may provide relief for women suffering from hot flashes
and other symptoms associated with menopause. Commission E -- an
expert committee on herbal remedies established by Germany's
Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices -- has approved
the use of black cohosh root (which has an estrogen-like action)
as an effective treatment against PMS and nervous conditions
associated with menopause. It should not be used for longer than
six months.
Anise
may be helpful as a natural estrogen promoter.
