Diverticulitis

Diverticulitis commonly occurs when a person is suffering from constipation. It is a condition in which the walls of the intestine become inflamed, causing the formation of small pouches called diverticula. These pouches alone are relatively harmless, but when waste materials become trapped within them they can cause pain, fever and chills. Symptoms of this disorder include cramping, tenderness in the abdomen, constipation or diarrhea, nausea and a continuous need to eliminate. Diverticulitis is a disease found mostly in older people between the ages of 50 and 90. Smoking, stress and poor eating habits have been shown to make symptoms worse. Other problems that may be related to the disease are obesity and gall bladder disease.
