Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel syndrome (CTS) describes symptoms that occur when the median nerve which controls thumb muscles and feeling in the first three fingers of the hand becomes compressed or damaged. The carpal tunnel is the small opening in the wrist through which the median nerve passes. Compression of this nerve may occur because of swelling due to pregnancy, pressure from bone spurs, arthritis and tendentious. Most recently CTS has been linked with repetitive wrist motion injury. This type of injury is most common among people who type or work on word processors for a living. Other occupations that have been linked to CTS are cashiers, assembly line workers, athletes, drivers, hairstylists, and musicians. Symptoms of CTS include mild numbness or tingling in the fingers, burning in the hand, and occasionally, severe crippling pain.
Surgery should be considered a last resort, after trying a combination of dietary supplements, physical therapy, and acupuncture.

How alternative medicine may potentially help?

Certain nutrients and herbs may help minimize pain and inflammation. Acupuncture may be highly effective, according to one clinical trial.

Herbs

  • Bromelain reduces inflammation due to injury or surgery.
  • St. John's Wort can potentially aid improve nerve impulse transmission.

Vitamins

  • Vitamin B6 has shown clinical benefit in CTS, despite the lack of a link between B6 deficiency and presence of CTS. (Benefits may take three months to appear.)
  • Vitamin B2 has shown clinical benefit in CTS, and its effect is enhanced by combination with vitamin B6.
