following statements are not intending to replace your physician's
treatments. Any serious illness should always consult with your
doctors.
Bladder Infection
Bladder infection is caused most commonly by the bacteria E. coli.
This bacteria travels to the bladder through the urethra, and is most
common in women. This is because the female anatomy allows easier access
to the bladder from both the vagina and anus where E. coli can be
found. In men, a bladder infection can be a sign of a more serious
problem such as prostatitis.
Symptoms
- Frequent need to urinate; painful, burning sensation while
urinating; urine with a strong, bad smell; blood in urine.
- Also, pain in lower abdomen is possible, as are low back pain,
slight fever and incontinence.
How alternative medicine may potentially
help?
Certain herbs may help defeat or destroy E. coli.
Herbs
- Uva
Ursi is a traditional remedy for bladder infections, and one
clinical trial supports its efficacy.
- Cranberry
juice and supplements have been shown clinically effective in
controlling cystitis, probably by reducing the ability of E. coli
to cling to the mucous membrane of the vagina.
- Garlic
and goldenseal
may help control this condition.
- Commission E-approved herbs are: echinacea
purpurea, which is supportive against chronic lower urinary tract
infection; couch grass for irrigation therapy for inflammatory
diseases of the urinary tract -- its essential oils have antimicrobial
activity; goldenrod also for irrigation therapy; horsetail
herb, which serves as a mild diuretic and is useful for
inflammation of the lower urinary tract; stinging nettle
herb and leaf, which helps increase urinary volume.
Vitamins
- Vitamin C may promote healthy immune function.
- Acidophilus
may help to restore "friendly" bacteria.
