Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's Disease is the fairly common type of dementia found frequently in elderly
people, although it occurs in people in their late forties as well. This disorder is
characterized by mental deterioration, which eventually effects the individual's ability
to complete daily tasks. Early symptoms of the disease include apathy, depression, and
loss of memory. As the disease progresses, problems such as the inability to make proper
judgments, loss of bladder control, changes in personality and severe mood swings may
exist. The individual will need full time care during the last stages, as they may become
totally incapacitated. These symptoms are caused by the tangling of nerve fibers near to
brains memory center, which changes the way information is carried to the brain.
Protein-containing plaques build up in the brain and damage any existing healthy nerve
cells. Recent research suggests that there may be a very strong correlation between
aluminum absorption and the onset of Alzheimer's. Those with severe Alzheimer's have been
shown to have four times the normal amount of aluminum in the nerve cells of the brain.
Alzheimer's disease, which leads to dementia, affects roughly 6% of seniors over 65 years
of age. More than 10% of individuals between 75 and 85 years of age are affected, and as
much as 20% of seniors over 85 develop the disease. In its most developed state, the
disease makes the individual completely helpless and entirely dependent on caregivers
Symptoms
- Increasing forgetfulness leads to severe loss of memory, identity, reasoning, judgment
and control over bodily functions and movement.
- Paranoia, anxiety, depression, hallucinations and irrational behavior often develop.
How alternative medicine may potentially help?
There are many vitamins and herbs which may help to slow down the symptoms of this
disease. Many researchers believe it is important to keep the absorption of aluminum into
the body at a minimum.
Herbs
- Butcher's Broom may help to promote circulation.
- Ginkgo Biloba has
antioxidant properties and can help to improve blood flow to the brain. Germany's Federal
Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices -- has approved ginkgo biloba leaf extract for
memory deficits in individuals suffering from dementia syndromes.
- Ginseng(Panax) : Biological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin found
that Asian ginseng (panax ginseng) improved the spatial and cognitive impairment in aged
rats
Vitamins
- Vitamin C may enhances immune function.
- Vitamin B-12 may have deficiencies for the patients
- Vitamin A
needs to be replenished
- Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that may help transport oxygen to
the brain.
Minerals
- Boron may help to improve brain function.
- Selenium is a powerful antioxidant.
- Zinc can potentially help to stop plaque formation.
