always consult with your doctors.
Adrenal
glands are located above the kidneys and are
responsible for the secretion of stress management hormones such as
adrenaline and cortisone. The adrenals play a key role in response to
stress, and the body's ability to handle it. Adrenal hormones help to
maintain the balance of salt and water in the body, metabolize
carbohydrates and regulate blood sugar. Dizziness, headaches, fatigue
and memory loss may all be signs of reduced adrenal function. If
function of the adrenal glands is severely reduced, Addison's Disease
may develop. Fatigue, moodiness, nausea and discoloration of the skin
occur. If the adrenals are overactive, a rare disease called Cushing's
Syndrome may occur. Those suffering from Cushing's Syndrome often
experience muscle atrophy, red marks on the face and swollen eyelids.
Smoking, chronic stress, alcohol/drug abuse and poor diet can all
contribute to problems with the adrenal glands.
How alternative medicine may
potentially help?
Cognitive therapy, counseling, and biofeedback can aid in stress
management. Good nutrition aids adrenal function, and combats symptoms
such as fatigue and depressed immunity. Research suggests that certain
"adaptogenic" herbs may help moderate the adrenal response to
stress.
Herbs
Chinese
Ginseng (Panax ginseng) and Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus
senticosus) are considered "adaptogenic" tonics that
moderate and balance the body's response to acute and chronic
stress—a traditional belief substantially supported by experimental
and clinical research. For guaranteed potency, look for products with
standardized ginsenoside and eleutheroside content, respectively.
Vitamins
B-complex vitamins, especially vitamins B-5 (100-500 mg) and B-6
(50-100 mg), may assist adrenal gland function.
Vitamin C is depleted by stress.
Zinc
(20-30 mg) and magnesium
(250-500 mg) are considered key adrenal nutrients, and can be obtained
from a good quality multivitamin-mineral formula.
