The following statements are not intending to replace your physician's treatments.  Any serious illness should always consult with your doctors.

Acne is a very common skin disorder affecting over eighty percent of Americans at some point in their life. Sebaceous glands produce oil (sebum) to keep the skin lubricated. Sometimes, oil and dirt become trapped and bacteria start to grow causing a small infection and inflammation. Acne is most common in teenagers as changing hormones cause overproduction of oil in the sebaceous glands. The exact cause of acne is not known, but there are many factors that can contribute to an outbreak. These include heredity, allergies, stress, intestinal toxemia, metabolic potentization of male hormones in the skin, and exposure to air pollutants.

More than 80% of all Americans between 12 and 24 years are afflicted by the inflammatory skin disorder acne. Although both genders are affected, many more men than women suffer from the disorder.

         Can alternative medicine potentially help?

There are many nutrients, which may help treat acne. These have antibacterial properties and may also be important to help maintain healthy skin. There are certain herbs that can be used as a steam sauna for the face to help stimulate new cell growth on the face.

Herbs

bulletBurdock Root may help cleanse the blood.
bulletMilk Thistle could potentially aid the liver in cleansing the blood.
bulletRed Clover may promote new cell growth.

Vitamins
bulletVitamin B complex plays a role in maintaining healthy skin tone.
bulletVitamin A reduces secretion of sebum. Doses high enough to effect symptoms (300-400,000 IU per day) are potentially toxic.
bulletVitamin E supports skin health, in part by boosting vitamin A activity. When combined with selenium, vitamin E has been shown to suppress acne, probably by boosting levels of glutathione peroxidase.
bulletVitamin C can be helpful in boosting immune function.

Minerals
bulletChromium picolinate produced improvement in one study, and improves sensitivity to insulin, a suspected factor in acne.
bulletZinc gluconate has shown substantial benefit in clinical trials, perhaps because low blood levels encourages conversion of testosterone to DHT, a possible causative factor.
